Four years and a difficult separation later, Canadian electro-pop group Dragonette is set to release a new album.

“Royal Blues,” the group’s first LP since 2012′s “Bodyparts,” will be released Nov. 11. “Sweet Poison,” a track off the new record, premieres exclusively on Speakeasy below.

“Royal Blues” was a long time coming in large part due to the way vocalist and writerMartina Sorbara and crew work. “We are very slow. We are not super-prolific people,” Sorbara said.

Sorbara and her husband, Dragonette co-founder and musician Dan Kurtz, also went through a separation in the meantime. “It made everything kind of difficult, but the creative process was, all of a sudden, completely different,” Sorbara said. “We had to figure out what we were and who we were and how we work and everything. It was like starting from zero.”

Because of that, she added, Sorbara and Kurtz weren’t confident that they would be able to release anything, let alone a new album. But now they’re both happy about releasing the album, and they maintained a creative relationship, she said.

The situation influenced Sorbara’s writing for “Royal Blues,” her emotions propelling her during the process. As a result, the album has a melancholy tinge, but it’s not entirely sad.

“When I listen to it, I realize what a growth period these past years have been,” she said. “I feel like I hear the joy of learning about life and love, like losing some naivety and becoming aware of how seriously sad and amazing living is.”
